The Whitby Yacht Club’s (WYC) sailing school is thrilled to offer this year’s nautical courses packed with adventurous learning, hands on experience, and friendly instructors. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned sailor, our coaches provide fun environments and techniques to sharpen your boat-handling skills and deepen your appetite for sailing. Since 1975, our school has been successfully training students in the Whitby basin and on Lake Ontario. Our certified coaches are experienced sailors equipped with lots of patience in a relaxed environment. Sailing is for the whole family. Whether exciting and competitive or relaxed and laid-back, this sport is also a wonderful channel for personal growth, community connections, and leadership development. With new themes each week, this program is perfect for those who are looking at getting out on the water and having fun in the sun! Each session mixes in kayaking, sailing, on shore and on water games, and end of week crafts! Many participants in this program choose to return for multiple sessions, especially when joining with friends and siblings!

For the person who likes to seek adventure and challenge themselves while learning fun new activities, Whitby Watersports camp is the solution. Campers will spend their time Kayaking, and Paddleboarding, as well as learning on-land basic sailing lessons (such as knots, parts of the boat, etc.) this one-week program offers you the ability to try a variety of new Watersports, even if you’ve never stepped off of solid land before. Offered in a one-week format, many participants sign up for multiple sessions per year!

Over a period of 2 weeks, sailors will be taken through the Cansail 1 curriculum which covers a variety of important lessons for effectively skippering and crewing on a dinghy sailboat. Upon completion of their Cansail 1 level, sailors will proceed to begin on their Cansail 2 level. Please note that Cansail 1 and Cansail 2 levels each take on average 2 weeks (1 session) each for completion. This levels provides skills necessary to graduate and join the CANSail 3 and 4 levels. Therefore, to complete both a Cansail 1 and Cansail 2 level, this will typically require 4 weeks of camp to complete.

*Activities include Sailing in our RS Feva, RS Quest, and Club 420 sailboats

For those thrill seekers who have completed Cansail 1 & 2 and are ready to try something new, get ready to try out Wing Foiling with WYC being the first sailing school in Ontario to offer it in a course format! In this activity, sailors will learn the basics of how to control a foil board through the use of a handheld wing to navigate and maneuver, eventually adding the Hydrofoil component where athletes will be able to fly across the water creating a sensation like no other! Available in both 1 week and 2 week formats, come on out and give this new sport a try this summer!
*Ages: 13 - 18
*Board, hydrofoil, wing, and all safety gear included!
*Lifejackets required for all on water activities.
*Great for all participants, especially those with experience snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding, and other board sports! Previous board sport experience is not a requirement, however having moderate to good balance skills is a plus!

For those who have already completed their CANSail 1 levels, we are offering the new OPTI Race Development Team. This program is intended for those who have already had an introduction to sailing and are looking to further their learning and work towards their CANSail levels. This is meant to be a starting point for those interested in joining the Optimist Race Team in future years and give them exposure to the competitive side of Opti sailing!

*Small class size of 6 Sailors per session
*Activities include sailing and training in Optimist sailboats
*CANSail 1 level must be completed to enrol in this program

Now that you’ve completed your CANSail 1 & CANSail 2, let’s take what you’ve learned and apply it to the sport of competitive sailing! For two - four weeks you will be training in a variety of different sailboats including Club 420's, RS Feva's, and Optimist sailboats. In this course, sailors will be learning important skills and tactics for racing and sailing by former members of WYC’s competitive race team! Offered in a two or four week session for convenience, most sailors attend for 4 weeks to complete their CANSail level. Please note that Cansail 3 & Cansail 4 are two separate levels, typically requiring 4 weeks each to complete. While a participant will not typically complete their entire level in 2 weeks, this format allows sailors to progress towards their levels in a schedule that works for them, with their checklist continuing the next time that enroll in a session!

Have the opportunity to join the WYC Race Team and enjoy an exciting summer of training, traveling, and competing at different events representing the Whitby Yacht Club. Sailors learn critical racing skills and cover subjects such as sail theory, the rules of racing, fitness, and how to maintain their race boats. With limited spaces available and a high demand, tryouts in the spring are behaviour driven and are used to assess the sailor's attitude and willingness to learn! Note: sailors must supply their own boats to participate in this level.
*Ages: 9 - 16
*Sailors must bring their own Opti to join the WYC Optimist Race Team. Charter options are available for the 2024 Season!
